The Challenge

ChargePoint was positioned at the intersection of two massive transformations: the global shift to electric vehicles and the modernization of electrical grids. Their vision was ambitious—build the largest, most reliable EV charging network that could serve millions of drivers while intelligently managing grid load, maximizing station uptime, and providing seamless user experiences. But they faced complex technical and operational challenges that threatened to derail this vision before it could scale.

The fundamental problem was complexity at every layer. EV charging isn't just about delivering electricity; it's a complex orchestration of hardware, software, payments, grid management, and user experience. Charging stations needed to communicate reliably with cloud systems despite being deployed in parking garages with poor connectivity. Payment processing had to work flawlessly across multiple payment methods, currencies, and billing models (pay-per-use, subscriptions, corporate accounts). Station downtime was catastrophic—a broken charger could strand drivers with dead batteries, destroying brand trust and adoption.

But the hardest challenge was grid integration and load balancing. When hundreds of EVs charge simultaneously during peak hours, they can overload local grid capacity, causing brownouts or triggering expensive demand charges. ChargePoint needed intelligent systems that could balance charging loads across stations, integrate with utility pricing to charge vehicles during off-peak hours, predict demand patterns to prevent grid overload, support vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities for future energy storage, and reduce operational costs through smart energy management. Their legacy systems couldn't handle this complexity—they needed a complete platform rebuild designed for the scale and intelligence the EV revolution demanded.

Built robust, scalable backend using Python and Django REST Framework architecting microservices for station management, user accounts, billing, analytics, and grid integration—providing RESTful APIs that power web dashboards, mobile apps, and third-party integrations.
Created comprehensive operations dashboard using React enabling ChargePoint staff to monitor all 5,000+ stations in real-time, diagnose technical issues remotely, manage user accounts, process refunds, analyze usage patterns, and optimize station placement based on demand analytics.
